Club members who gathered in the rugby clubhouse on Sunday 14th July witnessed one of the best Wimbledon finals for years – and still managed to keep up with the cricket.
Torn between the World Cup, Grand Prix and (perhaps) Netball, a select group chose our own sport, with the added temptation of delicious cream teas. For some, the almost-five hours of the final on screen was as gruelling as next door’s club session earlier on, but almost everyone stayed the course for a memorable afternoon organised by Maggie Andrews.
The final tie-break won by Novak Djokovic was on at the same time as the innovative cricket equivalent won by England, so smart phones were essential items – as they were for Barry Eaton’s comments: “We all had a fantastic afternoon (evening) watching this great occasion in a truly traditional Wimbledon way.  Well done Maggie!”
